HOUSING VOUCHERS
The Housing Choice Voucher program (formerly known as Section 8), provides assistance for low-income families in the private rental market through housing assistance payments. Program participants normally pay between 30 and 40 percent of monthly adjusted income toward rent and utilities. The housing assistance payment subsidizes the balance of the rent to the owner/landlord.
Laconia Housing works with several local landlords and property management companies to identify rental units that are safe and meet our code requirements. Voucher holders select a rental unit from the private rental market. Laconia Housing currently manages more than 400 Housing Choice Vouchers in the Laconia area, investing more than $2.5 million back into the community.
Laconia Housing also works with families through the Family Self Sufficiency Program, which encourages Housing Choice Voucher holders to work toward economic independence and self-sufficiency. Laconia Housing connects families with agencies, schools, and businesses to develop skills and work experience. Families who are interested in learning more about this program and the commitment requirements should contact Laconia Housing’s Choice Voucher Department.
